Abuja - "The level of insecurity in Nigeria is now unprecedented and we must not be silent while certain persons visit mayhem on the rest of the nation with so much impunity", denounced His Exc. Mgr. Augustine Akubeze, Archbishop of Benin City and President of the Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, during the thanksgiving service for the 60th birthday of the Archbishop of Lagos, His Exc. Mgr. Alfred Martins. Archbishop Akubeze in stressing the growing insecurity, asked his brother Bishops to continue to denounce the state of affairs in which Nigeria has sunk.
The President of the Bishops’ Conference has asked government authorities for an urgent intervention to resolve the mounting insecurity in the Country, mostly kidnappings and killings. Mgr. Akubeze praised Mgr. Martins for his consistency in speaking truth to power over the vices ailing the nation, indicating it as an example to follow. "We urge you to continue to speak truth to power because that is the way available to priests to correct the wrongs in the society", he concluded.
Even Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, emphasized that "as Christians, we will be contradicting our vocation if we do not take a stand against corruption, tribalism, self-centredness, kidnappings, and many other societal crimes we witness daily in our Country".
